Tinkerly vs ChatGPT Plus: what you pay and what you get
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month for OpenAI’s models in OpenAI’s own app. Tinkerly starts free, charges each message at its model’s price, and puts GPT models in one account, next to tools for documents, slides, pictures, spreadsheets and diagrams. Heavy daily ChatGPT users may get more from Plus; lighter or mixed use can cost less here.

How do Tinkerly and ChatGPT Plus compare?
ChatGPT Plus is one flat monthly fee for OpenAI’s models, used inside ChatGPT. Tinkerly is pay as you go: you hold credits, each message costs its model’s listed price, and every model on the pricing page shows its price. The table puts the two side by side on the points people ask about most.
| Question | ChatGPT Plus | Tinkerly |
|---|---|---|
| Price a month | $20 | Free to start; buy credits when you need more |
| Whose models | OpenAI only | OpenAI (5 models) |
| Documents, slides, pictures | What the ChatGPT app itself offers | A tool each for documents, slides, pictures, spreadsheets and diagrams, with downloads |
| How usage is counted | One flat fee, with usage limits OpenAI sets | Each message costs its model’s price in credits |
| Free tier | OpenAI has its own free plan, with less included | 15 free credits a day on the models marked Free and 25 one-time trial credits for any model |
Prices are for one person, billed monthly, in US dollars. They were checked on 2 November 2026 on each company’s own pages: ChatGPT Plus. Plans and models change, so each company’s site has the latest. Tinkerly’s side of the table is live: it shows what is on today.
Can you use GPT models in Tinkerly?
Yes. OpenAI’s GPT models are among the 5 models you can pick in Tinkerly today, each with its own price per message. You choose the model before you send, so a quick question can go to a cheap model and a hard one to a stronger model.
The list of models, and what each one costs, is on the pricing page. It is the same list you see in the model picker in the app, with the same prices.
Is Tinkerly cheaper than ChatGPT Plus?
It depends on how much you use and which models. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 whether you send five messages that month or five thousand. In Tinkerly you pay for each message, from 1 to 11 credits a message depending on the model, so a light month costs little and a heavy month with the strongest models costs more.
Every free account also gets 15 credits a day on GPT-4o mini and GPT-5.4 nano. Unused daily credits don’t carry over, but they come back each day.
Credits you buy never expire, so a quiet month is not money lost. If a model fails or returns nothing, its credits come back automatically. A flat subscription works the other way: you pay for the month of access, used or not.
When is ChatGPT Plus the better choice?
ChatGPT Plus is the better choice if you use OpenAI’s models a lot every day, want one predictable bill, or depend on features that only exist in ChatGPT’s own app. For a heavy daily user, a flat fee can work out cheaper than paying for every message with the strongest models.
- You send many long messages every day and mostly to the strongest models: a flat fee caps what you pay.
- You prefer one known price each month to watching a balance.
- You rely on features that are built into ChatGPT’s own apps and are not offered elsewhere.
- You only need OpenAI’s models and don’t want a second account.
None of these is a reason to avoid ChatGPT Plus. If they describe you, it is probably the right subscription.
When is Tinkerly the better choice?
Tinkerly suits you if your use goes up and down, if you want several models in one place, or if you want finished files rather than text to copy. You pay only for messages you send, and you can start without paying anything.
- Some weeks you use AI a lot and some weeks hardly at all.
- You want documents, slides, pictures, spreadsheets and diagrams you can edit and keep, not only chat replies.
- You want to keep related chats and work together in projects.
- You want answers that can search the web first.
- You want to use models running on your own computer as well.
Can you use both?
Yes. They are separate services with separate accounts, so nothing stops you keeping ChatGPT Plus and using Tinkerly alongside it. You could keep one subscription for daily chat and use pay-per-message credits for other models or for making files, which costs nothing in a month they don’t use it.
If you are deciding whether to cancel, try Tinkerly for a few weeks first with the free credits, then look at your usage page to see what those weeks would have cost. That number, next to $20 a month, is a fair answer to “which is cheaper for me”.
